Tethering apps compared: camera tethering software for phone and computer

"Tethering app" covers very different tools: desktop software that drives the camera from a laptop, camera makers' own companion apps, phone apps that pull photos off the camera, and apps that deliver every shot to the cloud. The right one depends on where you edit, how you connect, and where the photos need to end up.

What to look for

Desktop tethering software (Capture One, Lightroom Classic)

Best for studio work with the camera on a stand: live view, camera control and on-set grading on a calibrated screen. Needs a laptop and usually a USB tether cable; delivery to clients is a separate step.

Camera makers' companion apps

Canon Camera Connect, Sony Creators' App, Nikon SnapBridge and Fujifilm XApp are free and good for remote shutter and copying selects to the phone. They aren't built for transferring every full-resolution frame or delivering to the cloud as you shoot.

Phone tethering apps for control (Cascable, ShutterSnitch)

Strong at remote control, live view and receiving shots on an iPhone or iPad; delivery onwards is limited or manual.

Camera-to-cloud tethering (CloudTether)

Tethers the camera to the phone over USB or Wi-Fi and delivers every full-resolution file — JPEG or RAW — to Dropbox, Google Drive, a client gallery or FTP within seconds, with no laptop. Built for events, weddings, sports and press where delivery speed matters.

USB vs Wi-Fi

USB is faster and steadier — about 3× faster than Wi-Fi on the same camera in our field data; Wi-Fi gives you freedom to move. The best apps support both.

Our pick: CloudTether

If the job is getting every shot off the camera and to the client or the cloud while you're still shooting, CloudTether is the purpose-built option: your phone is the tether and the uplink, so there's no laptop, no cart and no venue-Wi-Fi dependency.

If the job is controlling the camera and grading on a big screen in a studio, a desktop tool is the better fit — and some photographers run both: desktop software for the set, CloudTether for live delivery.

When something else fits

CloudTether isn't a RAW editor or a studio capture suite. For tethered studio shoots where the art director needs to grade every frame on a calibrated monitor, use Capture One or Lightroom Classic.
